Inside Casdagli Cigars: PART III

Welcome to Part III of our inside look into Casdagli Cigars. In our first segment, Inside Casdagli Cigars: Part I, we took a trip through time exploring the rich Casdagli legacy that would eventually branch off and evolve into Casdagli Cigars. In Part II, we explored the current super premium Casdagli line up and got some great pairing notes from sommelier, Vlada Stojanov.

In our final installment of this feature, we’ll explore Casdagli’s luxurious accessories as well as the D’Boiss Club Bespoke located in Oldtown Tallinn, Estonia’s largest city and capital. We’ll feature details of the gorgeous Bespoke Cigar Lounge by Casdagli and Jeremy Casdagli will take us on an exclusive virtual tour of D’Boiss Club Bespoke culminating with an inside look at this warm, inviting space to enjoy a cigar. We’ll wrap things up with the centerpiece of our Casdagli experience with our hour-long virtual interview with Jeremy as he joins us from his Bespoke Cigar Lounge.

Villa Casdagli Collection

Like many cigar brands, Casdagli also offers a line of fine cigar smoking accessories and apparel. But unlike many cigar brands, Casdagli enriches their unique accessories with an air of luxury, elegance and superior quality. The Bespoke experience realized. This special and, in some cases, customized line of products were developed to commemorate Casdagli Cigars’ 20th anniversary in 2017. The line is aptly named the Villa Casdagli Collection, an homage to the family’s iconic early 20th century Cairo “palace.”

The collection is relatively small and most are inspired by Byzantine motifs like the wallpaper that adorned rooms in Villa Casdagli and unique Casdagli icons and logos like the Colossus of Rhodes and the family’s crest of the double-headed goose. From gentlemen’s accessories like cuff links and pocket squares to one-off Xikar Xi cigar cutters, luxurious ashtrays with gold inlay and custom artisanal humidors made to order, Casdagli Cigars knows how to spoil you.

Bespoke Cigar Lounge & Virtual Tour

The Eastern European country of Estonia borders Russia to the East and Latvia to the south, but is just a boat ride over the Gulf of Finland, to where else…Finland! Estonia is about the size of US sates Vermont and New Hampshire combined and its population is about the same as my home town of San Antonio, Texas, roughly 1.3 million give or take. Boasting a market economy and one of the highest per capita income levels in Eastern Europe, Estonia also enjoys a vibrant, and at times, turbulent history. In the northern part of the Baltic nation lies its capital and most populous city, Tallinn.

The medieval city of Tallinn is Estonia’s financial center and its strong economy offers many perks, one of which is the absence of a corporate tax. This attracts many businesses, so Jeremy Casdagli set up shop in an area know as Oldtown. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Oldtown offers colorful, gabled houses, medieval buildings amid the din of shops, restaurants and outdoor cafes lining the cobblestone streets. Along one street off the town square you’ll find the “concept” lounge, D’Boiss Club Bespoke.

I don’t want to spoil the virtual tour so I’ll simply characterize the location as a welcoming and dapper gentleman’s one-stop-shop. Which really doesn’t do it justice, but then again who better to tell you about it than the man himself. The original building includes walls dating back to the 16th century, but the updated decor and modern materials contrasts nicely with the rich textures of centuries past. No where is this more evident than a visit to Casdagli’s Bespoke Cigar Lounge.

Open the door and you’ll immediately take in a the charm of the naturally lit room tucked under rustic, rough-hewn wood beams, richly lined with wood floors and a sea of oversized, leather caramel-colored chairs. Modern conveniences like the gleaming metal pipes of the air system contrast with an array of vintage art, sculptures and other furnishings that complement the environment. Adorning the walls are a mix of portraits mixing a montage of Casdagli family history along with cigars and products of the Casdagli brand.

Of course, the lounge would not be complete without a walk in humidor where you can choose cigars from Casdagli’s complete portfolio, grab a Cuban or even something from Oliva or Ashton among many others. Completing the smoking experience is a fully stocked whisky/ey bar or you can opt for one of Jeremy’s favorite libations, Maotai (or Moutai), a Chinese liquor made from fermented sorghum with a savory, soy sauce-like flavor. If you look in the photo below, to the far left you can see a clear case with bottles of Maotai.

The virtual tour below was shot exclusively for 99 Cigars by Jeremy Casdagli.

Virtual Interview with Jeremy Casdagli

Arguably the highlight of our time working with Casdagli Cigars was our virtual interview with Casdagli Cigars Founder, Jeremy Casdagli. Jeremy joins us from his Bespoke Cigar Lounge by Casdagli puffing on one of his favorite lanceros. We didn’t get to cover as much I would have liked since we only had about an hour and yet we managed to cover a lot. Jeremy shares insightful details and entertaining stories of his background, his family’s legacy and history, the impact of COVID-19 and the FDA, his Cuban connections and his re-launch in the US. And everything in between. I apologize in advance for the low audio volume of our Zoom interview, so please adjust as needed.

This was a fantastic experience and opportunity for us and we hope it was for you as well. When we began discussing this project with Casdagli Cigars we knew almost immediately there was simply no way we could get all this wonderful information and material in one article or interview. We’d like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the team at Casdagli Cigars for humoring us in allowing 99 Cigars to bring this exclusive feature to life. We’d like to give very special thanks to Jeremy Casdagli and his wife, Triine, who gave a lot of their valuable time providing exhaustive information, feedback and suggestions to this project. Aitäh!

If ever you find yourself traipsing in or around historic Tallinn, Estonia, be sure to head to Oldtown and stop in to Casdagli Cigars. Get a haircut, pick-up some swanky, hand-made Italian shoes and if Jeremy is around, buy him a Lancero and he just might humor you with a personal tour of their digs. – In Fumo Pax!
