Cancer Researcher nominated as next FDA Commish
After an exhaustive 2 months of background checks, President Trump has formally nominated M.D Anderson Medical Executive, Dr. Stephen Hahn, for FDA Commissioner. Hahn will replace Dr. Scott Gottlieb who left office in April of this year. The post has been overseen by interim commissioner, Dr. Ned Sharpless, who concurrently heads the National Cancer Institute (NCI).
Dr. Hahn, an esteemed cancer researcher and radiation oncologist, has been credited with righting M. D. Anderson’s ship with strategies to overcome its financial woes as well as restore the Houston-based cancer research giant’s credibility after being sullied with some ethical conundrums.
Dr. Hahn has received praise for his handling of some sensitive and potentially embarrassing issues at M. D. Anderson and is largely seen as someone who is able to work within any environment, strengths that may help outshine his lack of political acumen and policy experience.
Once confirmed, Dr. Hahn will have his hands full with many nagging health issues our country is facing, and of course the role he’ll need to play with regard to the FDA’s current deeming rules regarding the regulation of premium hand made cigars. – In Fumo Pax!
