“Hand Rolled: A Film About Cigars” Lands Distribution Deal
After almost 3 long, exhaustive years, the first-of-it’s-kind cigar documentary, Hand Rolled: A Film About Cigars, is finally approaching splashdown after securing a distribution deal. This is welcome news to many in the cigar cosmos who have not been fortunate enough to catch rare screenings across the US. The yet to be announced deal reportedly includes wide release within the next couple of months. As very minor contributors to their Indiegogo campaign, we were fortunate to gain a pre-release looksie.
The brain child of Directors, Jesse Mariut and Steve Gherebean, Hand Rolled takes you on a journey from revolutionary Cuba to the current efforts of the cigar industry to assuage the onslaught of groundless FDA meddling. This rich, colorful story is brimming with a detailed history of the glory days when Cuban cigars ruled the world along with a thoughtful culmination of the vibrant artisanal culture of handmade cigars that has arisen and flourished since.
Narrated by actor Peter Weller, Hand Rolled is a mosaic of individual perseverance skillfully interwoven with personal stories told by the Cuban and expat cigar producers that survived revolutions, civil wars, trade embargos, market downturns and personal tragedy. The movie also highlights a cultural shift to include new generations of cigar lovers, a strong civic contribution to strengthen local communities and a look behind the curtain of a misguided bureaucracy that threatens all of it.
Hand Rolled was produced with the help of industry icon, Pete Johnson of Tatuaje and includes splendid interviews with many other industry luminaries, including a sit-down with pioneer, Don Jose Padron before his death. Enlightening as well as entertaining, the award-winning Hand Rolled is a thoughtful foray into a world many of us thought we knew and, at least for us here at 99 Cigars, an experience that galvanized our passion even more.
