Review: Mombacho Cosecha 2013

 

I admit it. I’m an old softy when it comes to unique stories of simple, sometimes random events that lead to something special. Lightening in a bottle. Mombacho Cigars was simply yet another boutique name in a seemingly endless sea of, well, boutiques. A few people I know floated some recommendations, among them Mombacho, and after some superficial research and a Liga Maestro, I knew these guys had something special. The fact that the Liga Maestro turned out to be one of the best Nicaraguan cigars I’d ever smoked was certainly the kick in the pants to dig a little deeper. What I found was a brand oozing with passion, a uniqueness and an almost wistful, nostalgic culture. And one kick ass cigar.

 

Mombacho begins humbly in colonial Granada, Nicaragua where two backpacking buddies, Cameron Heaps and Markus Raty, were smitten by a small, family cigar factory. After years of spending time at this little factory, a handshake and smoke atop the dormant volcano consummated the deal to open their own factory and in 2010, Mombacho was born. It’s not only a nice homage to the city, the people and the culture they grew to love, but also a tip of the cap to the lush, volcanic soils that make great cigars possible. The team would later be complete with the addition of master blender, Claudio Sgroi, a veteran of international cigar markets and Henki Kelner pupil.

Released in 2018, the Cosecha (Spanish for “harvest”) 2013 is the second of Mombacho’s limited Cosecha line releases and is the brainchild of Sgroi. All tobaccos used are from a single crop in 2013 and like all Mombacho cigars, all are Nicaraguan. Only 800 boxes were made making them tough to find. The aesthetics of our Cosecha, aside from the pigtail cap, are unremarkable, but the almost-seamless, russet-colored wrapper and cocoa and piecrust aromas are worth noting. The draw is open, but requires a little more effort in my opinion and produces a noticeable apricot piquancy on the palate.

 

Mombacho is not a cigar company catering to seasoned cigar smokers, but rather it purveys unique experiences to like-minded people.

 

The initial profile rewards with a smooth creaminess complemented by intonations of cinnamon, leather and caramel. There’s a light spice accompanied by hints of chili pepper and cocoa.  The long finish of mint and espresso is equally mesmerizing. Transitions maintain medium to full body with an uptick in strength in the final leg. Balance and complexity throughout is spot on featuring more smoky and semi-sweet profiles highlighted by notes of cedar, graham cracker, apricot and mocha. Combustion too is almost perfect producing a strong, 1”+ ash. Like the Liga Maestro, this too is one the best Nicaraguan cigars I’ve ever smoked, but I’m giving the edge to the Liga. Nonetheless, if you can find one of these babies – beg, borrow, steal! – In Fumo Pax!

  • Transition: Profile dominated by notes of cedar and chocolate; underlying graham cracker intonations; sweet chocolate and espresso finish continues; slight residue of cinnamon on retro; spice lingers.
  • Transition: Sweet, zesty mix of apricot and cedar; uptick in spice on palate; mocha and espresso finish; residual hints of graham cracker on retro.
