JRE Aladino Toro
Like many of us, one of our cigar buddies posts pictures of the cigars he smokes on social media and it’s fair to assert that his selections are, in my opinion, limited. But, he has good taste and among his usual suspects of various Fuente and RoMa Craft blends is the oft sighted JRE Aladino. A relatively new company, the acronym, “JRE”, is the initials of Julio R. Eiroa, current patriarch of the Eiroa cigar family and father to Justo and Christian Eiroa (CLE Cigars). JRE Tobacco Co. was spun off from CLE Cigars in 2015 with a line-up of 3 blends – Aladino, Rancho Luna and Tatascan. Aladino, translated means “Aladdin”, yes, as in the genie and the lamp story.
Actually, the inspiration behind the name comes from an old movie theater located in Danli, Honduras called El Cine Aladino which, ironically, is now the site of Christian Eiroa’s CLE factory. Aladino was conceived out of Julio’s desire to create a “classic old-fashioned” cigar that harkened back to, as he states, ‘the golden era’ of Cuban cigars. Cuban cigars are synonymous with corojo tobacco and the Eiroa family’s mastery with cultivating and blending corojo varietals grown on their Las Lomas farm in Honduras is the envy of the non-Cuban cigar world.
The Aladino is unique as it is 100% corojo leaf and all Eiroa-grown. Aladino’s band is simple, partially colored in brown with plain text yet powerful, highlighted by a brilliant yellow strip and a prominent ‘A’. Eiroa’s tribute to the golden era is reflected in the dates, “1947-1961.” The pecan-hued wrapper is a bit lumpy, has some tooth and is a bit veiny. The roll is nice with an even cap and invisible seams. Aromas from the foot and wrapper are pleasant and varied highlighted by notes of citrus, cake batter, cocoa powder and leather. The draw is excellent with a noticeable tang of Worcestershire on the palate.
Initially nuanced with a strong nutty draw, the Aladino settles into rich, complex profiles punctuated by leather, cream, salted caramel and black pepper. Finishes are long and robust with semi-sweet woody, earthy overtones. Transitions are more woody and spicy but with well-balanced intonations including candied nuts, cedar and chocolate. The Aladino holds a strong 1” ash and the combustion is nearly flawless with a nice even char throughout the smoke. I’ve not tried any pre-embargo Cubans, but the Aladino’s essence is reminiscent of some Cubans I’ve enjoyed and is an equally, thoroughly enjoyable experience. Julio Eiroa has quietly created a special cigar and it should be enjoyed regularly. – In Fumo Pax!
