Bite Size Review: CLE Corojo

From Spain to Cuba to Honduras (with a little good ol’ ‘Murica thrown in for good measure).  The Eiroa family legacy has come full circle now that the third generation of tobacco growers and premium cigar crafters has taken the wheel… and are taking it to new levels of awesomeness. Immortalized for resurrecting corojo leaf greatness, Christian Eiroa rode that Camacho horse into the sunset before selling off to Oettinger Davidoff AG. We will be posting the Camacho Corojo review soon, so don’t crawl under that rock just yet. Christian also gave us the epic Eiroa First 20 Years and Asylum 13. How do you follow up those kind of successes? Well, by creating your own line, of course! CLE Cigars was launched in 2012 and now features a robust offering of 7 blends, including the zesty Corojo.  The build of our Corojo is uniformly firm, but it won’t break glass. The oily, slightly-mottled walnut-colored corojo wrapper is lightly veiny and toothy with invisible seams. The cap is well done. Oh yeah, did I mention it’s mouth watering? Coffee and caramel aromas from the shaft and foot will consume you. The draw? Superb – hints of gengerbread and tea are tantalizing! 10 for 10 so far.  The inital profile includes a lusty mix of leather, toasted almonds, red pepper and caramel. The Corojo produces copious amounts of smoke and offers woody retros and rich, bready finishes. Expect distinct transitions with wood and coffee profiles and some surprise notes of maple wood and cinnamon. Body and strength increase as you smoke and there is a light spice that creeps in midway. Overall, this is not the most complex nor the richest, but the balance and flavor palette is solid. Combustion and burn are very good, never getting out of shape. Unfortunately, the Corojo does get a bit musty and stale with about 1.5″ – 2″ left which was disappointing. It’s difficult to get the blends right in different sizes; however, when you consider the initial badassery you’re getting for the king’s ransom of ~$6.50/stick hell,  not even a couple of IPAs can provide that kind of happiness. – In Fumo Pax!
