Bite Size Review: Las Calaveras Edición Limitada 2017

The sugar skull on the box is a hint at the inspiration behind Crowned Heads’ annual limited edition. The year, 2017, represents the 4th year of the limited line which began in 2014 and it’s popularity is largely credited with putting Crowned Heads on the map. An homage to the annual Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebration, the Las Calaveras line represents a celebration of the lives of those who passed on the year before. As in past years, the cigars are produced in only 4 vitolas and packaged in either special 4-count (one of each size) boxes or  3 of the 4 sizes individually can be purchased in 24-count boxes. The annual releases have also fared well with reviewers with the 2016 release making a splash with ratings in the low 90s (Cigar Aficionado). The blends are different each year and the 2017 LC52‘s Ecuadorian wrapper is a rich, oily mottled russet-brown with some tooth and a few veins. Aside from a spongy foot, construction overall is top-notch thanks to Pepin Garcia’s torcedores. Very pleasing floral and raisin aromas from the shaft complement the notes of pecan of the foot. The draw on this toro is excellent. From the initial complex profile of leather, anise, baked bread and cinnamon to the nice transitions introducing more wood and earth, the 2017 LC52 keeps things interesting adding hearty and savory textures while also throwing some curveballs like hints of candied pecans to keep everything balanced. She never gets stale or overly harsh and holds a tight, 1″ salt and pepper ash without flinching. The 2017 LC52 offers excellent combustion and a solid burn requiring only 1 touch up for an intermittent irregular char. This is an enjoyable cigar with a good flavor palette, moderate complexity and a user-friendly disposition; however, there’s nothing here that’s blowing my hair back. Even with some age, there’s some noticeable rough edges and while I find no fault in the pricing for a limited edition, I’m not sure I’d drop $240 for a box. The special 4-pack is a must have or spend a little extra and get you a fiver of one size – In Fumo Pax!

Did you Know: The limited edition line is produced at The My Fathers Cigars SA shop, not the usual Crowned Head’s home of EP Carrillo’s Dominican factory.
