Bite Size Review: Espinosa Alpha Dawg
I admit it: I’m a card-carryin’ member of the Espinosa fan club. There are a number of his cigars on my “to smoke” list, but after smoking just a few, I knew this guy was serious. I also confess I picked this up at my local cigar haunt more out of curiosity, and ok, a bit of bravado. Hey, it was taunting me alright?
This Dawg began life as more of a special event stick catering to the Espinosa faithful. Like many of Erik’s creations, the Dawg took on a life of its own growing demand among the cigar community. Not to ignore the voice of those drooling over this blend, Espinosa put the Dawg into regular production. Given the brash moniker one would think this is a cigar with grow-hair-on-your-tongue kinda strength. But it’s not. Instead, this is a medium-to-full strength cigar, with a classic Espinosa flavor pallet and great complexity.
The Dawg is very aromatic with a lot going on from the foot and the Rosado wrapper. For starters, you can expect lots of leather, chocolate and red pepper notes as well as an underlying earthiness. She’ll toy with you with a rich, smooth beginning offering notes of caramel and nougat and then go for your throat with a hearty dose of earth, pepper, coffee and cedar. You’ll never have to touch her up. The finish begins spicy turning more coffee-like near the middle. The Dawg comes in 3 vitolas and in boxes of 10. Just for a day – be the Alpha! – In Fumo Pax!
