Bite Size Review: Hoyo De Monterrey Excalibur
Another “Bingo” from an original brand from 19th century Cuba. This little Honduran treat with a sumptuous Connecticut wrapper came as one of my cigar-of-the-month selections and is also my first Hoyo. I’ve given up on the cigar-of-the-month shtick (another story) but I will add this gal to my growing list of go-to medium sticks. Incredibly smooth with a near white ash, this little number will dance on your tongue and yes, like me, you will most certainly smoke this till you burn your fingers. Lots of deliciousness here so crack open a stout or mooch a latte from a buddy and you’re set. Not a huge fan of the smaller vitolas, but in some cases, some sticks seem to shine their brightest in smaller packages. I haven’t tried some of her more full-sized siblings, so I guess I’ll just have to try them! Enjoy a near-perfect draw with just a punch. Nice, solid feel with a compact foot that ensures there is lots of flavorful goodness to come.

Draped in a toasty-looking Connecticut wrapper, a whiff of the foot will get your taste buds humming. Lights very easy and burns nice and even with a grayish white ash. The EX comes to life with a burst of nuts, oats and hints of honey. As she dances, she offers subtle hints of cinnamon and will get more peppery as you go, always with a toasty finish. The EX is incredibly smooth and balanced, but don’t be fooled – she ain’t sweet!. If you lean more on the mellow to medium end of the spectrum, this one has to be on your list to at least try. – In Fumo Pax!
