Bite Size Review: Alec Bradley Prensado

What a great way to end a fantastic day at the beach with friends. Relaxing back at the condo for a nightcap and a Prensado. This heralded, full-bodied stick garnered a 96 rating from Cigar Aficionado and #1 cigar of the year honors in 2011. I wasn’t ready for this. A full-bodied smoke this smooth? Drop yer linen and start yer grinnin’! Now, my palate is still evolving so in the spirit of full disclosure, I’m sure I missed some nuances in the flavors department. Full-bodied ladies aren’t always my go-to, but I still came away with a healthy respect for something of this high quality.

This Gran Toro is box pressed (I’m not a huge fan of box pressed sticks) but its construction is superb from head to foot. In this case I got a perfect draw with just a punch and just as equally marvelous with a cutter on the smaller robusto. This gal may be full-bodied, but she smokes like a medium-full.

The dark Corojo wrapper offers a delicious chocolaty aroma. When lit correctly the first time, she’ll burn slow and perfectly even. The initial inhale is a deluge of spice and complexity with strong earthy notes and a savory salt and pepper profile. As she runs, you’ll notice the hints of chocolate, espresso and sweet toasty finish and even slight hints of cashews and leather. Again, complexity but its so well balanced. The 5″/50 robusto lasted an hour, so be prepared to enjoy this treat. Definitely one I need to get to know better. – In Fumo Pax!
